Chapter Fifteen

My mother’s locket looked perfect, I noticed, inspecting my reflection in the mirror. I was comfortable in my white jeans, a print wrap blouse, and wedge sandals. For once I left my hair down tonight and curled the ends. I sure do hope Aunt Cece likes Alex. Guess I was going to find out soon , I thought when I heard the knock at my front door.

“Hey, don’t you look sharp tonight,” I held the door open for Alex.

“Don’t forget, I have someone to impress tonight. She’s the only family you have and I wanted to make a good impression.” He nervously brushed imaginary lint off his jacket.

He was wearing dark dress pants and a sports coat. “She’s going to love you.” I stepped closer to him and wrapped my arms around him.

Alex pulled me closer and brushed my lips with his, in a warm affectionate kiss. “I sure hope so, because I’m in love with her niece.”

“I love you too, Detective.” My heart raced every time he held me and I couldn't keep the smile off my face. “Let me give her a quick call and then we can go.”

Aunt Cece answered on the second ring and I let her know we would be there shortly.

As careful as I could, I scooted Pepper off my purse where she had fallen asleep. She of course woke up, appearing to glare at me for disturbing her. I stroked her head as she settled back down before turning back to Alex. “Alright, I’m ready. She’s going to meet us out front of the Gage.”

Alex held the door open for me. “Then let’s not keep her waiting.”

We pulled up in front of the Gage Hotel and found Aunt Cece standing out on the curb waiting for us.

“Aunt Cece,” I said, stepping out of the car. “Did you have a good afternoon?”

“Oh yes, I shopped for a bit and found the most fabulous art gallery. I was headed back here when I happened in to see Maggie. She invited me to go back to the cafe to help her sample some wedding cake flavors.”

“Wow, you did have a busy afternoon.” I started to introduce Alex to Aunt Cece, but she looked over at him, “You must be Alex.” She reached out and gave him a welcoming hug.

Alex smiled at me over her shoulder.

When she let him go, he said, “I am and it’s a pleasure to meet you.”

Aunt Cece looked over at me and grinned. “Oh, he’s a handsome one, isn’t he?”

I couldn’t resist smiling at her, “Yes, he is.”

A little color crept into Alex’s face.

“Aunt Cece, why don’t we go?”

Alex opened the back door for her. We had decided to take my car so Aunt Cece wouldn’t have to climb up into his truck.

We walked into Giovanni’s and were seated when Tony, the restaurant’s owner, came walking up. “Good evening, folks. Cece, good to see you again.”

I was surprised that Tony knew who she was and it must have shown on my face.
